Central Nanaimo is sometimes referred to as the hospital area. Nanaimo’s modern hospital that serves the Central Island is a well-respected, leading edge medical facility. Across form the hospital is Beaufort Plaza, which offers more medical facilities as well as neighbourhood shops. Several general practice and specialized medical clinics cluster around this neighbourhood. But Central Nanaimo is much more than a top-notch medical community. It offers a plethora of shops and small malls including Beban Plaza with Quality Foods and Central Drugs as well as the new Country Grocer located nearby. Recreational facilities abound. Beban Park draws people from all over Nanaimo and even farther afield with its indoor pool, pitch ‘n putt, ball parks, soccer fields, Particpark, an imaginative children’s playground, soccer fields, BMX track and two off-leash dog areas. Beban Park is also home to the annual Vancouver Island Exhibition. From May to October, the Wednesday Farmers Market is also a big draw. Bowen Park is one of Nanaimo’s true treasures with its tall trees, waterfall and idyllic walking trails and picnic areas. Bowen Park also offers a popular Seniors Centre, lawn bowling, outdoor swimming pool in the summer months, Frisbee golf, duck pond, and rhododendron garden. The curling club and skateboard park are also in close proximity. Buttertubs Marsh in Central Nanaimo offers a genuine glimpse of wild nature. A 2.2 kilometre trail winds through the marsh where birders with binoculars can be spotted as often as the waterfowl they are observing. The homes of Central Nanaimo are close to all these amenities. From medical to shopping, parks to playgrounds, it’s a traditional neighbourhood that has it all.
